Wise Brain Bulletin • Volume 18.3

Hello friend,

You are invited to join Dr. Rick Hanson for a special 90-minute webinar - this Saturday, June 15 from 1-2:30pm PT - in celebration of the upcoming 15th Anniversary of his book Buddha’s Brain! Rick will be offering a selection of guided meditations and practices from the book, and also answering your questions live!

All proceeds will support Wellspring Institute for Neuroscience and Contemplative Wisdom. The Institute publishes the bimonthly Wise Brain Bulletin, provides funding for research, maintains a database of key scientific papers, and as a 501c(3) organization, is supported entirely by donations from people like you.

In addition, earlier this year Wellspring Institute helped fund the first annual Board meeting of the Global Compassion Coalition in London, which brought together thought leaders, researchers, activists, and academics to advance our understanding of how to use compassion to promote individual and collective well-being.

Please do join us for this special live event in support of Wellspring Institute so that we may continue our good work in 2024 and beyond!

And now on to this issue...

Our minds and bodies are truly magnificent yet can easily get hijacked by old patterns of stress and self-criticism. But as the following articles demonstrate, we have the power to pause, to feel the living breath in our bodies, and to disentangle from the trance of negativity. And when we enter that space of allowing and awareness, we recognize and honor the universal longings we all share: to feel safe, to give and receive care, and to belong.

Getting Stuck

Our ingrained stress responses can trap us in harmful cycles. Stepping away from thinking and striving, and into our bodies’ ability to sense the world, not only helps to ease stress and clear the mind - it also plays a crucial role in recognizing and addressing burnout.

Wholehearted Confidence
by Fleur Chambers

Instead of seeing self-doubt and imposter syndrome as failures, we can choose to embrace rather than eradicate our insecurities, and in doing so, foster a more compassionate and resilient relationship with ourselves.

by Tom Bowlin

A single moment of connection between a person and a stray animal highlights how simple interactions can alleviate loneliness for both.

Our nervous systems respond to past traumas in complex ways. By understanding our unique 'neurosignature' and engaging in trauma-informed practices, we can gain valuable insights into navigating the safety paradox during trauma recovery.

by Dr. Jonathan Fisher
