How to Get On the Same Team: Relationship Conflicts Mailbag

"It's always helpful to go back and forth between the subjective and the objective, the inner and the outer, to go back and forth from really feeling and opening to and exploring, okay, what's it like for you on the inside?"
— DR. RICK HANSON

Dr. Rick and Forrest answer questions focused on navigating common relationship conflicts, focusing on situations where people need to find a middle path between different needs. The discussion covers balancing sensitivity with directness, bridging differences in emotional processing speeds, setting healthy boundaries without anger, and understanding how childhood patterns influence adult relationships. Throughout, they explore how couples can move from seeing issues as “me problems” to “we problems,” emphasizing the importance of being on the same team and strengthening connection.

NEW FROM THE WEDNESDAY TALK/MEDITATION:

Stress Relief through Mindful Breathing

Stress can take over our bodies and minds, leaving us exhausted, reactive, and disconnected from ourselves and others. But there is a way to find steadiness, even in the middle of life’s chaos.

So this week I thought I’d share a meditation on Mindfulness of Breathing for relieving stress. Through the simple act of breathing, we can calm down our nervous system – which gives us a foundation to build lasting inner strength, peace, and resilience.

In my talk, I also share how to stay present while your mind is racing, how to use the breath to calm your nervous system, and how to apply ancient practices to modern-day stress.

ASK RICK:

Does the brain develop primarily due to the influence of relationships?

While the social dimension to life is profoundly important, it is just one of several major influences on the developing brain, especially past the first birthday. For example, the brain is incredibly shaped by a young child’s interior sensations, their engagement with sensorimotor experiences, and by their interior reflections (largely nonverbal) about their world and their self.
