Everything You Need to Know About Therapy
"A great therapist cannot overcome an unmotivated client; a motivated client can get the most out of even a mediocre therapist. That includes what they do in the other 167 hours in the week between that one hour in the week that they go see their therapist." – Dr. Rick Hanson
In this mega-episode, clinical psychologist Dr. Rick Hanson and Forrest Hanson explore everything you need to know about therapy. They share how you can get more from therapy, finding the approach that’s right for you, and some perspectives on why therapy is so expensive. They then run through the five major schools of Western psychotherapy before discussing a few alternative modalities. You’ll learn how long to stick with a therapist before looking for alternatives, questions to ask a prospective therapist, and how to maximize your results from therapy.

I’m looking for a Buddhist-oriented clinical psychologist who will do phone or Zoom sessions. Can you recommend one?

Finding a therapist is a very personal and intuitive process. It can take time, persistence and mindfulness to find the right match for you. There are a couple of online resources that might help with your research:
The Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy offers a therapist directory. Consider reaching out to a few of these therapists that appeal to you and find out whether they do sessions via phone or online.
Tara Brach also offers some guidelines and resources for finding mindfulness-based psychotherapists.
