NEW ON THE BEING WELL PODCAST: |
Becoming Securely Attached to Yourself |
 |
|
"What can we truly count on in this life?
When we can't always count on other people, or the world altogether, we need to learn how to count on ourselves." — Dr. Rick Hanson |
|
Forrest and I explore how to build an internal foundation that lets us connect with others, regulate our emotions, and explore the world from that secure base. We talk about how this is supposed to develop in childhood, why it doesn’t for many people, and what we can actually do about it as adults. |

NEW FROM THE WEDNESDAY TALK/MEDITATION: |
Science Says You Need Social Support |
 |
|
When you feel alone with your worries, disconnected from others, or burdened by old patterns you can’t seem to shake, it’s easy to think you’re supposed to handle everything by yourself. But science — and deep wisdom traditions — show that feeling genuinely supported is not a luxury; it’s essential for resilience, healing, and well-being. In this talk, Rick explores how to recognize and receive the social support already around you, and how to strengthen it inside your own mind. |

One of the ways we grow well-being in ourselves and the world is through small, practical acts of care. We may not be able to solve every problem, but small acts add up over time to make a big difference.
That's why I'm happy to support DonorsChoose - they connect people like you directly with teachers who need resources for their students that many schools simply don't have enough of. You can make a difference with one small donation to a classroom that needs it. Together, we can all make a big difference for educators.
For a limited time, your gift will be matched, to help students and teachers who need our support. Visit DonorsChoose today to find a classroom near you and have your gift matched today.

ASK RICK: |
Why do humans crave affection and companionship? |
 |
|
A key distinction here is between healthy attachment and unhealthy craving. Healthy attachment is the natural desire for connection, friendship, love, and bonding with others. Craving, on the other hand, is when that desire becomes driven by grasping, fear, or neediness.
In a nutshell, healthy attachment helps us thrive, while craving tends to create suffering.
Human beings evolved as deeply social creatures. Our brains are wired for connection, and healthy relationships are essential for well-being. You can see this in attachment theory, social neuroscience, and in the chapters on “Intimacy” and “Courage” in my book Resilient.
At the same time, our natural need for connection can sometimes get tangled up in fear or insecurity. Then attachment can shift into things like jealousy, intense reactions to rejection, or an us-against-them mentality. The good news is that we can gradually untangle these patterns by growing inner strengths like self-worth, emotional balance, mindfulness, and compassion. As we feel more grounded and secure inside ourselves, it becomes easier to stay connected to others with more wisdom, steadiness, and care. |
